Granite Design HEX Stand

Launching earlier in the year, Granite Designs hit the market with their HEX Stand. Long story short, it is a portable take on the typical crank mounted stands of old (like the Scorpion bike stand).

Manufactured out of aluminium, the HEX stand is pretty light-weight (720g) and supports bikes with a hollow axle crankset.

What did I like about the HEX Stand?

The portability of the stand is great! Being able to just have something available that enables you to work on your bike on the fly is super convenient. It looks good, it’s lightweight and really easy to use / setup.

Is the HEX Standan alternative to a Mechanic stand? The short answer is no. Well, not really. The HEX stand is more of an additional tool with pretty niche uses. As I mentioned above, I find that I’m using the HEX stand for quick adjustments in the garden, washing the bike after a ride or for keeping in the car when at trail centres and may need to do some work on the fly.

However, there are scenarios where you would consider the HEX Stand as an alternative to a mechanic stand and that would very simply be where you just don’t have the space for a full blown setup. Apartments or smaller homes for example.

However, due to its portable nature, there is a bit of play in the bottom bracket and in the fold up axle arm which means that the bike can move a bit when you’re working on it, nothing major but a noticeable amount. Admittedly, this gave me initial concerns about putting any force on the bike for fear of breaking the stand but I can say that it did not give way or show signs of stress when putting an acceptable amount of force on the bike. That said I would still be cautious around how much force is put on it. The spec sheet says it can take 20kg.

Retailing at $79, I don’t think the price is unreasonable. It’s a bit more expensive than the Scorpion Bike stand but you would expect this considering the portability factor.
